    📰 News & Notes

15 Times to Use AI (and 5 Not To)

Ethan Mollick’s post on AI use offers practical guidance for leveraging AI effectively in daily life while also recognizing its limits.

    Rundown:

Mollick lists 15 scenarios where AI excels, such as summarizing long documents, generating creative content drafts, or offering feedback on writing. He also highlights five situations where AI may falter, like dealing with nuanced decision-making or overly sensitive topics.

    The Context:

    • AI thrives when performing repetitive tasks, analyzing data, or sparking ideas for creative projects. It’s especially useful for tasks requiring speed and breadth over depth.
    • However, AI struggles with context-heavy or emotional problems, like resolving conflicts or making critical strategic calls, because it lacks true understanding and empathy.
    • Mollick’s insights aim to align expectations, emphasizing that AI is a tool to augment human capabilities—not replace them.

    Why it Matters:

As AI integration accelerates, knowing when and how to use it is crucial. Understanding AI’s strengths and limitations helps avoid pitfalls while unlocking its transformative potential in productivity and innovation

The Four Most Powerful AI Use Cases in Instructional Design Right Now

    The Rundown:

Instructional designers are leveraging AI in four transformative ways, as revealed in insights from Dr. Philippa Hardman’s AI & Learning Design Bootcamp.

    The Context:

    1. Learner Personas: GPT-4 enables designers to simulate user interviews, creating detailed learner personas for targeted strategies.
    2. Instructional Strategy Design: Tools like Consensus provide evidence-based teaching methods tailored to specific learners.
    3. Quality Assurance: AI like Claude excels in ensuring alignment with standards such as WCAG and UDL.
    4. Impact Prediction: AI predicts learning outcomes, aiding in design iterations before course delivery.

    Why it Matters:

These applications streamline instructional design by addressing key challenges like personalization, evidence-based decision-making, and quality assurance. As AI evolves, its potential to transform education will only grow. Designers who adopt a research mindset and measure AI’s impact can harness this tech for faster, higher-quality results.

Screens vs. Paper: A New Perspective on Reading

    The Rundown:

A growing body of research shows that people generally comprehend and retain information better when reading on paper compared to digital screens. This preference for paper stems from its tactile nature, navigational ease, and reduced cognitive load.

    The Context:

    • Studies indicate that digital screens can hinder deep reading due to distractions, glare, and limited ability to interact with the text (e.g., flipping back to previous sections or annotating intuitively).
    • Research has shown that reading on paper provides a more “anchored” experience, helping readers form mental maps of content. This spatial orientation aids memory and comprehension.
    • The physicality of paper—its weight, feel, and permanence—enhances engagement, while screens often promote skimming and multitasking.

    Why it Matters:

As digital reading becomes the norm, understanding its limitations is critical for education and cognitive health. While screens offer convenience, they may sacrifice the depth and clarity that paper provides, particularly for immersive or complex reading tasks. This insight can guide choices in learning, work, and leisure.

    📰 News & Notes

No Pain, No Gain: Desirable Difficulties

Nidhi Sachdeva encourages us to lean into the paradox of desirable difficulties! While making learning a bit harder—like adding spaced practice, retrieval tests, or varied scenarios—might frustrate learners in the short term, it builds brain muscles for durable and flexible knowledge. Sure, mistakes and discomfort aren’t fun, but they’re the secret sauce to lifelong learning. Embrace the struggle; your learners will thank you later (even if they grumble now).

🎯 Takeaway: Desirable difficulties make learning tougher in the moment but lead to deeper, longer-lasting knowledge and skills.

What is the effect of different types of cues in educational videos?

Educational videos can be a goldmine for learning—if done right! A recent exploration into the use of cues like highlighting (think: red markers) or eye-tracking simulations (imagine following the teacher’s gaze) in videos reveals a key truth: cues help focus learners’ attention, reducing cognitive overload. While both methods improved learning outcomes, neither significantly outshone the other. The takeaway? Instructional designers should embrace the power of cues to guide learners and help them cut through the noise and focus on what matters!

🎯 Takeaway: Effective cues in educational videos sharpen learners’ focus and lighten cognitive load, making even complex topics easier to grasp.

    📰 News & Notes

Getting started with AI: Good enough prompting

Ethan Mollick emphasizes that effective use of AI requires a “good-enough” approach to prompting, not perfection or deep technical expertise. By spending about 10 hours experimenting with AI for practical tasks, users develop an intuition for what works. Treat AI as a collaborative coworker—clear in instructions, iterative in feedback, and unafraid to explore its capabilities. Recognizing AI’s quirks, such as its forgetfulness and infinite patience, helps unlock its potential for productivity, creativity, and even idea generation.

🎯Takeaway: Use AI as a collaborative partner by mastering simple, iterative prompts to leverage its strengths and navigate its limits.

How to Build a Custom GPT for Instructional Design

Dr. Philippa Hardman, shows how building a custom GPT for instructional design enhances task accuracy and consistency by tailoring AI to specific needs, such as writing learning objectives. Using tools like OpenAI’s GPT Builder, even non-tech-savvy designers can create AI “partners” that leverage structured knowledge, follow best practices, and adapt to complex instructional challenges. These GPTs save time, ensure quality, and enable designers to focus on creativity while mitigating risks like bias and context limitations.

🎯Takeaway: Custom GPTs empower instructional designers to streamline repetitive tasks and improve content quality by embedding domain-specific expertise into AI tools.

Is AI-generated video as GOOD as real video in learning?

Research confirms that AI-generated videos can match traditionally produced ones in learning effectiveness and learner perception, according to a study by Leiker et al. This opens doors for scalable, cost-efficient solutions in training and simulations, from soft skills to customer interactions. Moreover, advancements in AI avatars and interactive characters enable dynamic, real-time engagement, pushing the boundaries of experiential learning. As tools like Synthesia , Colossyan and others make high-quality video production faster and cheaper, instructional designers can now integrate AI-driven media to amplify learning outcomes without compromising quality.

🎯Takeaway: AI-generated videos deliver learning outcomes on par with traditional ones, offering a scalable and cost-effective alternative for L&D professionals.

PowerPoint Presentations: Attention & Cognitive Load

If you want your PowerPoint presentations to actually resonate, it’s all about working smarter, not harder. Research using eye-tracking tech shows that the secret to keeping your audience engaged is simplicity—less text, clean visuals, and strategic organization. Overloading slides with too much info? Big mistake. Instead, break it down: small chunks, clear examples before details, and handouts to back it all up. When you align your presentations with how people’s brains really work, you’ll not only capture attention but also make your content stick.

🎯Takeaway: Simplify your slides, focus attention, and align with how the brain works—because clarity drives connection.

The State of Instructional Design, 2024

A recent survey by Dr. Philippa Hardman, conducted in partnership with Synthesia, shows that AI is changing instructional design. Subject matter experts are increasingly designing learning experiences, and performance metrics now prioritize real-world impact. While AI tools streamline workflows, challenges like time constraints and outdated tools persist. The future of instructional design will be shaped by AI-driven innovation and a focus on practical, job-relevant skills.

🎯Takeaway: AI is reshaping instructional design, driving a shift towards practical, impactful learning experiences.

What are Interactive Emails & Why You Should Send Them?

Interactive emails are another thing L&D should ‘steal’ from marketing. They make emails more engaging by adding features like polls, quizzes, videos, and buttons. This improves user interaction, retention, and provides valuable data. L&D teams can use interactive emails to create more engaging and accessible learning content, boosting engagement and learning outcomes.

🎯 Takeaway: Interactive emails increase engagement by turning passive communication into an active, user-driven experience.

Set Your Content Compass and Purpose

This article is a good reminder of the importance of defining a clear content purpose to align content with business goals and audience needs. By crafting a “content compass” — a purpose statement or framework — L&D professionals can ensure that content creation remains focused, helping decision-makers evaluate existing materials and future ideas based on strategic alignment. The process involves collaborative brainstorming, revision, testing, and practical application through examples, ultimately guiding content decisions and improving effectiveness.

🎯 Takeaway: A well-defined content purpose ensures all content aligns with organizational goals, helping make smarter content decisions.

AI in L&D: Intention and reality

This report by Donald Taylor and Eglė Vinauskaitė finds that L&D’s current AI adoption often prioritizes speed over quality, limiting its strategic value. To maximize AI’s potential, L&D must shift from internal efficiency to external impact by addressing specific business challenges and integrating learning with broader organizational goals.

Takeaway: L&D should move beyond superficial AI use and embrace its potential to solve real business problems and drive strategic value.

How I use Notebook LM: Google’s Killer AI Note-Taking & Research Assistant

In this informative introduction to Google’s NotebookLM by Ross Stevenson, he demonstrates how it can be used to consolidate and analyze various data sources. Its features, such as note organization, comparative analysis, and automated document generation, make it perfect for creating study guides, FAQs, and more. L&D pros can use it to streamline their research, content development, and project management.

🎯 Take away: Google’s NotebookLM is a valuable tool for L&D professionals, simplifying data management, research, and content creation.

Why are we suckers for Astrology, the Meyers-Briggs, and other shaky psychology tests?

Attention instructional designers: resist the allure of personality tests! While the Myers-Briggs might seem like a magical sorting hat for your learners, its scientific validity is about as reliable as astrology. Sure, people enjoy being labeled as “visionary masterminds” or “compassionate facilitators,” but these categories are more marketing than science. The Big Five personality traits offer more accuracy, but even they struggle to capture the nuances of individual learners. Remember, slapping labels on learners might be tempting, but it’s no substitute for effective instructional design.

🎯 Take away: Don’t let pop psychology stereotypes dictate your instructional design – your learners are more complex than a four-letter code or zodiac sign.

    Learning 101: The Untaught Basics

This paper by Junaid Qadir and Muhammad Ali Imran addresses the reason why most people forget so much of what they learn so quickly. It’s not their fault; it’s their learning strategies. Research shows that the best way to learn is through challenging methods, not easy ones. Embracing challenges, spacing out study sessions, and varying study techniques are effective ways to improve learning. It’s important to remember that feeling confident doesn’t always indicate true understanding. Therefore, it’s better to avoid taking the easy way out and start learning the right way.

Take away: The best learning is hard, not easy.

How to Be Lucky in Business and Life: 4 Science-Backed Principles

    📰 News & Notes

Effective Learning Strategies depend on Prior Knowledge

The latest from the Learning Scientists blog highlights how prior knowledge can make all the difference in learning. Using baseball double plays and chess as examples shows how experts chunk information into familiar patterns while novices struggle to process each piece. This difference in thinking leads to the “expertise reversal effect,” where novices need structured guidance, but experts thrive when left to problem-solve independently. It’s a reminder that learning strategies should evolve as people progress from novice to expert, much like leveling up in a game!

🎯 Take away: Novices need guidance, but experts thrive on challenges—so the best learning strategy depends on your level of expertise!

Why I Use Snipd for Podcasts

If you love learning through podcasts, Jeremy Caplan explains why Snipd is the sidekick you didn’t know you needed! With a tap of your AirPods or a button on the app, you can save and highlight key moments, seamlessly sync them to your notes, and even share them as mini audiograms. The AI-powered episode summaries and transcripts make finding golden nuggets even easier (premium features come at $42/year). While it lacks a desktop app, the ability to build a personal library of learn-worthy clips makes it perfect for anyone, especially content curators, looking to level up their podcast game!

🎯 Take away: Snipd turns learning from podcasts into a breeze, letting you save, share, and organize key moments with just a tap

Are We Now Too Impatient to Be Intelligent?

Rory Sutherland points out that we often prioritize readily available information over deeper, more meaningful knowledge. Time isn’t just a sequence of moments. It shapes who we are, how we perceive the world, and how businesses succeed. Understanding how time affects our behavior allows us to make smarter choices and create more impactful experiences. Are you ready to master the art of time? (This is worth watching, especially if you’ve never seen Rory speak – he is one of my favorites.)

Take away: Faster isn’t always better, we should consider the value of slowing down and taking time to appreciate the journey.

Something New: On OpenAI’s o1 and Reasoning

OpenAI’s new o1 (previously known as “Strawberry”) AI is like having a super-smart intern who sometimes takes things way too literally! o1 can solve really tough problems, even beating experts in physics. It can even figure out tricky crossword puzzles, although it thought “Galaxy cluster” referred to a Samsung phone instead of, you know, actual galaxies. While it’s not the best writer, its ability to plan and solve complex problems could be a game-changer for designing learning experiences, leaving L&D professionals to act more like mentors than instructors. But hey, at least it doesn’t ask for coffee breaks!

🎯 Take away: o1 AI excels at solving complex problems and could potentially revolutionize learning experience design.
